I have been a little lax on my posting lately. Eva now feeds herself and drinks water out of her sippy cup using her own hands. One day Eva, Eva’s Dad and I went out to dinner with a friend to Tommaso’s (an old family favorite, some of you may recall being dragged here by my parents). I was concerned that Eva was not going to tolerate the Italian atmosphere. We put some Cheerios on a napkin and much to our relief and surprise, she spent the entire night feeding herself. This was the first time she fed herself. Now she is an old hand at stuffing several different foods into her mouth (although Cheerios remain a favorite). In the words of one mother I know, “Cheerios are like crack for babies.”

Giving Eva water for the first time was really scary. I was so worried she was going to choke. It doesn’t help that Eva’s Dad had recently read a frightening article on delayed drowning (don’t google it). However, after other moms gave me demonstrations of their babies drinking water, we tried it. We started with a real cup, which is really messy. Then we moved on (backwards?) to sippy cups. She has to close her gums (no teeth yet!) around the spout to make the water come out. I thought she wouldn’t get it, but she almost immediately did. Now we are working on getting her to hold the sippy cup and drink out of it by herself. She mostly just bangs it around and throws it on the floor. Oh, but most importantly, she loves water!

Eva’s dad recently pointed me in the direction of the following article: Infants in the Pool – A Dive Into Controversy. I don’t really see what the controversy is all about. However, it reminds me that I do need to look into finding a pool to start swimming lessons soon. La Petite Baleen looks great, but is a little far, and a 1,000 person waiting list is a little long. We probably should have signed her up at the first thought of conceiving. Some concerns I have when finding a pool include: temperature and chemicals used. At least she will look adorable in her little bathing suit doing the butterfly.

Okay, this isn’t really her first shower. When Eva was colicky, we tried everything to get her to stop crying, including sticking her under the shower (it didn’t work). In the interest of saving time, we decided to give Eva a shower yesterday. She seemed to like it, but our bathroom floor was soaked (Dad held, Mom washed). Now that Eva is older (almost 5 months!) she is so much more open to trying new things! Also, we didn’t make the party we were rushing to attend because we got a flat tire. On the 880 right before the Bay Bridge! Fortunately Eva’s Dad is an expert driver. Eva’s first flat tire!

Giving Eva a bath is so much fun. When she was tiny, we had a very small window to give her a bath and were pretty much guaranteed some crying, but now she enjoys her baths. The cutest thing is when I place her in the tub she is extremely apprehensive and looks at me with these wide eyes. I have to talk her down with smiles and a hand on her back. After that it’s smooth sailing. She especially loves baths administered by Dad (with a little help from Mom).

So, when I was younger, my Mom would sometimes wash my darks with whites and I would end up with shirts with little white balls on them. I hated this. Well this weekend I washed Eva’s brown knit leggings with whites, on warm. They turned into snowballs! I loves these pants, and our friends bought them at a sample sale so I can’t go and buy new ones. So I broke out the sweater shaver. I can’t believe I am shaving these little leggings! I can’t believe I have time to shave these little leggings! But they are cute.
On another note, I am washing my sheets for the fourth time this week. That’s Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. These diapers just don’t hold it in. Sometimes I feel like the laundromat is my home, but dirtier (if you can believe that).
Update: Make that 5 nights this week. After Eva’s bath, I put her on the bed with diapers underneath. However she just keeps trying to flip over to her tummy, and oops, back to the laundromat.
