Little Berliner

This article is dedicated to Eva’s friends in Jingletown (formerly of Berlin). Let’s all move to Berlin!:

German Expressionism

Here is an article on blogs and book deals (I’m not looking for a book deal, but if a blog about LOLCats and skulls made out of candy can get one…….):

Why Blog? Reason No. 92: Book Deal

Eva’s Dad recently started getting the New York Times, and I am loving it! I don’t get a chance to read the whole thing (I’m a new mom!), but I can always find an article that is entertaining and germane to my life. If only they had more articles about babies.

Sunny Day

Today we went on a walk in the Berkeley Hills. We used a book called Hidden Walks in the East Bay and Marin. It’s not that great, for instance today we were walking in neighborhoods on windy somewhat travelled roads. However, we have seen some cool things, like the giant volcanic rock with steps in Northbrae and Dracena Park, a park made out of an old rock quarry. We had a great time except for breastfeeding on a street corner and losing her sunglasses. Yes those above. Don’t worry, I’ll buy a new pair tomorrow.

Eva Can Eat

At four months, Eva can eat solids. But she is not ready to eat solids. I am not ready for her to eat solids. She has been so dependent on me these past four months and it is hard to think of her gaining independence. I know. This is just the beginning.

Eva’s pediatrician told us that there is a window between four months and six months, and if we miss it, it will be hard to get her to eat. So, Eva’s Dad put together the high chair and now she is going to eat with us at the table in the hopes of her establishing an interest in food. It will be fun to gaze across the table and see this cutie.

Stuff White People Like

Unfortunately, we are white people (so are many of our friends who are non-white in the classic sense). For instance, today I had coffee while reading my morning chapter of a David Sedaris book, went to Berkeley Bowl, bought organic food to support my vegetarian lifestyle, drank out of my sigg bottle, listened to Mos Def and public radio on my ipod, and returned to my house near the water a stone’s throw from San Francisco, all while wearing a vintage T-shirt and outdoor performance gear. Okay, not all of this happened, but the point is it could.

So now Eva is well on her way to becoming a white person, courtesy of #78. We have found these fantastic CDs that end in the word playground made by Putumayo Kids . So far we only have French Playground and I am loving it! It came with lyrics in both English and French. I try and sing to Eva in French, but you know, that’s not going too well. We love the music though! I could listen to this even if I didn’t have a little one. Next on our list is Latin Playground, so maybe I can sing Eva an entire song!

Also, we will try to refrain from dressing Eva up for blog posts in the future. However, I am afraid a few may slip in.

Four Month Appointment

She is sleeping like a little angel in this photo, but it took a lot of effort. (In the interest of disclosure this picture was taken 1.5 months ago, but it is very cute.) Sleep is a continuing struggle for our little family. And now that she is so excited by the world and pays so much attention, getting her to sleep in public is close to impossible! Well, I can’t say that. We went to dinner with friends at Bagan (sister to Burma Superstar) a great Burmese place in Alameda. Try the wok-tossed broccoli. It is ridiculously amazing. You would have no trouble feeding a toddler this broccoli. It was very loud and crowded and she just passed out! But today I went to the Moms’ group, and she would not fall asleep. I think I missed a cue, because she was really upset. We had to leave early. I can’t bring the birthing ball everywhere!

I think what was really going on was that Eva was anticipating her four month appointment. Everything went really well. She is doing great. And of course, the stats: Height (or length, hmm) = 24 inches, Weight = 13.5 pounds, Head Circumference = 16 inches. She’s right around the 50th percentile (up from less than 10% at birth!) with height a little bit higher.

Dads Can Blog Too!

I am not nearly as good a writer as Eva’s Mama, but I’ll give it a try anyway.

However, I am great at posting cute pictures!

Eva roll, please …

I think Eva may already have a boyfriend!

Snowball Leggings

So, when I was younger, my Mom would sometimes wash my darks with whites and I would end up with shirts with little white balls on them. I hated this. Well this weekend I washed Eva’s brown knit leggings with whites, on warm. They turned into snowballs! I loves these pants, and our friends bought them at a sample sale so I can’t go and buy new ones. So I broke out the sweater shaver. I can’t believe I am shaving these little leggings! I can’t believe I have time to shave these little leggings! But they are cute.

On another note, I am washing my sheets for the fourth time this week. That’s Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. These diapers just don’t hold it in. Sometimes I feel like the laundromat is my home, but dirtier (if you can believe that).

Update: Make that 5 nights this week. After Eva’s bath, I put her on the bed with diapers underneath. However she just keeps trying to flip over to her tummy, and oops, back to the laundromat.

I Found It!

Eva has discovered… her tongue.  I’ve heard of babies finding their feet and their hands, but I have never heard of babies discovering their tongues.  She touches it, grabs it with her hands and pulls on it.  It is adorable.  Another thing she has become fond of is gurgling breast milk.  After eating, she loves to lay back and make cooing sounds while gurgling.  I can’t figure out if she likes the feeling or the sound.  She is so talented.

Hello World

This is a blog about my beautiful daughter, Eva Violet, and our adventures together. I feel like I need to give you some background before just jumping in. She was born November 29, 2007 (9:52am) after FIVE HOURS OF PUSHING! I suffered for her. (Stats: height = 19.25 inches, weight = 6 pounds, 7 ounces) After three months of being clueless about being a mother, she and I are slowly settling in. She is of course brilliant (she speaks complete sentences) and beautiful (you can see for yourself).
